MAC 187 duo fiber brush, the real review

A large full circular brush used for lightweight application and blending of face powder or pigments. Use to create soft layers or add textures. Made from a soft blend of goat and synthetic fibres.

There are a lot of reviews out there about this brush so i’ve decided to give my version of it.

If you don’t know, this is THE brush that is very popular among people who loves make up. I was caught up too, the must have and this seems to be what people are talking about. Got me wondering what is so great about this brush? It’s suppose to be a liquid foundation brush and can be use for powder as well. It’s said that applying liquid foundation with this brush gives it a air brushed look. No streak and even application. This is just what i need. Don’t we all want that air brushed look? Smooth, soft and flawless :)

I can’t wait to get my hands on it. I did go to a MAC store and checked it out before but i was hesitated about getting the brush. It is very pricey, roughly Rm 199. Seriously…. are u going to spend nearly Rm200 for a brush? So i did some research and of course it was cheaper abroad. Definitely cheaper if you are buying from the states (roughly around Rm135 after conversion) I got mine at Canada slightly more expensive around Rm150, i’ll take it! So let’s see how it does the magic?!

  • It’s really soft, dislike rough brushes.
  • I like how it can be used for liquid, cream and powder.
  • It’s suppose to be used with a stippling (patting) motion. After stippling it on you can just lightly swipe and blend. That’s how you get the air brushed look. You can also swirl in circular motion.

I’ve tried using it with a liquid foundation, tinted moisturizer, BB cream and powder. It’s great with all of them. In fact i think after using the brush the foundation looks much better. Especially with the tinted moisturizer. Before i use to apply it with a sponge or with my fingers, never really like the coverage (it just didn’t show up much) After i apply with this brush, i can see it’s so smooth and i can see the tinted moisturizer on my face with a light finished. Same goes for the BB cream. With the BB cream you need to pat it in so i thought this would definitely be the ideal tool for it, and i was right. It was fast and i can slowly build up the coverage.

I am really impressed with the brush. It really does give that air brush effect, soft, smooth, silky and give that even finished look(don’t have to worry about streaks) I can justify why the brush is so expensive now but i would say for me, looking at the quality and effect it gives it’s worth it. I like it so much i think next time when i go abroad i probably will get the smaller one for blush. In places like the States or UK you probably can find dupes but the quality will not be a MAC (and i think people should stop complaining about it because you want to pay peanuts to get high quality stuff you better think again. I think they are not being fair to the product to either side)

Before purchasing a expensive brush or any brush you should always think about what you need it for and why you need it. A good make up brush these days are quite costly. I don’t really like to buy the cheaper ones cause when it doesn’t do the job, i feel there is no purpose to it. Then you would  just dump it somewhere in your closet. I don’t have a lot of brushes only the ones i need. Do research, find reviews and save up some $ for better quality ones.

My go to brushes and probably most common brushes to be used are:

Foundation brush (could be any type) or a sponge (i was using a sponge before buying 187)

Blush brush (angle or any type)

Eye shadow (not too soft some where in the middle between soft and hard cause there are lot’s of eye shadow brushes. Feel the bristles before buying)

Blending brush (must have)

Crease brush (smaller crease brush for the outter V)

Eye liner brush (i use a gel liner, if you’re using pencil then you can minus this one out)
